Exco requests MBPJ to submit councillor zoning report before further action

SHAH ALAM, Dec 4 — Petaling Jaya's Mayor has been asked to submit a detailed report on the zoning distribution of the local authority's councillors to assess whether a restructuring of the area divisions is necessary.

State executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato’ Ng Suee Lim said the report must first be reviewed before any decision is made.

“In this matter, the Mayor and the directors always ensure that the zoning distribution for councillors enables them to carry out their assigned duties effectively from time to time.

“So far, I have not received any complaints regarding zoning in other local authorities. However, if there are issues in MBPJ (Petaling Jaya City Council), I request that the Mayor submit a report on whether each zone requires restructuring or otherwise,” he told Media Selangor.

Ng added that a review may be conducted if necessary to ensure that councillors can provide more efficient services to taxpayers without being burdened with a tremendous workload.

Earlier, Zone 24 Councillor Farhan Shah Ridzuan suggested that MBPJ re-examine the distribution of councillors to ensure a more balanced workload and improve service delivery efficiency.

He said the current distribution does not reflect the actual workload because there are significant differences in population, area, and land use across zones.

These imbalances affect the effectiveness of councillors in carrying out their duties, particularly in field presence, complaint response rates, and infrastructure maintenance.
