SHAH ALAM, Nov 30 — Quick-win flood mitigation projects have been effective in reducing disaster impact in several focus areas in Selangor during Tropical Storm Senyar recently, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
He said locations like Sungai Kandis, Jalan Kebun and Kampung Lombong saw minimal rises in their water levels compared with a time before these short-term projects.
“I got word over these few days that in places where we implemented quick-wins over a month or two, they managed to hold on.
“For instance, in Bukit Naga, Sungai Kandis, Jalan Kebun, Kampung Lombong, where we’ve done (these projects). We found there was no flooding, and if there were, it was very minimal,” Izham said in a Facebook video yesterday.
He said the Selangor government will continue with medium- and long-term mitigation projects to ensure flooding is comprehensively addressed.
According to him, long-term projects are ongoing at various stages and are set to be completed in the next three to five years.
“There are about 17 projects under the federal government valued at nearly RM3.5 billion, and another RM400 million worth of projects are ongoing under the state with over 40 flood mitigation projects,” Izham said.
In October, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the federal government has channelled RM3.5 billion, with an additional RM500 million from the state government, for flood mitigation projects across Selangor.
He said the significant allocation reflects the government’s commitment to protecting Selangor residents’ property and ensuring their safety.
