IPOH, Nov 27 — The Royal Malaysian Navy successfully rescued nine civilians who were stranded on Pulau Jarak, as well as 19 people from a capsized boat — one of whom was confirmed dead — in two separate incidents brought on by severe weather over the past few days.
It said that in the Pulau Jarak incident, nine individuals who were carrying out maintenance work on a maritime beacon were rescued after the authorities received a report that they were trapped following continuous heavy rain that caused landslides in several areas of the island.
“A Super Lynx helicopter was dispatched for the emergency evacuation, and all victims were airlifted without serious injuries,” the Navy in a statement today.
Meanwhile, in the waters off Pulau Perak, the Langkawi Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) activated a search and rescue (SAR) operation at 11am yesterday after receiving a report that a boat had capsized due to bad weather.
“The KD Ledang vessel was deployed for the search operation before all 19 victims were found at 10.15pm, including one who was confirmed dead.
“The survivors received initial treatment from Navy medical personnel before being sent to shore for further examination,” it said.
The Navy also reminded the maritime community to exercise greater caution when engaging in activities at sea, ensure that boats and vessels are in good condition, and comply with weather warnings issued by the authorities, given the currently rough conditions, particularly in the Straits of Melaka.
