ALOR SETAR, Nov 27 — The evacuation of 36 students and four lecturers from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) who are stranded in flood-hit Hat Yai, Thailand, is expected to be carried out this morning.
In a Facebook post, UUM said the operation will be coordinated by the Malaysian Consulate-General in Songkhla with the support of non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
“Let’s all pray that this effort can be carried out tomorrow (today),” the post said.
UUM also said that earlier attempts were made with the help of NGOs by deploying 12 boats to deliver food and essential supplies to the students and lecturers at Wangburapa Grand Hotel.
However, strong currents forced the boats back.
According to UUM, unlike other areas, the hotel is near a river, and the floodwaters have risen to more than a storey above ground.
It said the situation has made it impossible for any vehicle to reach the hotel.
The stranded students and lecturers are from the Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz School of Accountancy and have been stranded since November 22 while attending the Thai-MYS Cultural Exchange Programme 2025.
