SHAH ALAM, Nov 24 — Selangor’s first-mile and last-mile connectivity is most effective in urban centres such as Shah Alam, Petaling Jaya, and Subang Jaya, due to their higher population density, integrated land use, and stronger public transport network.
State executive councillor for investment, trade and mobility Ng Sze Han said the combination of train services, demand-responsive transport (DRT), feeder buses, pedestrian pathways, key destinations, and active private-sector participation has contributed to better connectivity in these areas.
“The most successful areas in implementing first-mile and last-mile connectivity are urban areas due to factors like population density, land use, and mixed development,” he said during the question and answer session at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly today.
Ng also emphasised the importance of integrated transport services, adding that once full rail connections are in place, dedicated infrastructure like DRT and feeder bus services all play a vital role in strengthening first-mile and last-mile connectivity.
He added rural or low-density areas face greater challenges in accessing first-mile and last-mile connectivity.
“These areas have low population density, which results in longer distances to rail or bus stations, low demand for regular transit, limited pedestrian infrastructure, and feeder services that are not economically viable,” he said.
