KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has mobilised 4,428 personnel, supported by 506 land, 7,355 maritime, and 19 air assets to face the northeast monsoon, which began on Thursday (November 13).
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said this mobilisation is part of MAF’s proactive measures in carrying out Ops Murni to assist the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) during the monsoon season.
"Army Chief General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan has been appointed to helm the Ops Murni mission, while the Army Operations and Training Branch serves as Nadma's Point of Contact.
"In addition, 15 Military Commanders consisting of Division and Brigade Commanders in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak have also been appointed to ensure effective execution," he told the press at the Kementah Camp today.
Earlier, Khaled received a briefing on Ops Murni at the camp, which detailed the MAF’s preparedness to deploy personnel and assets to affected areas for humanitarian and emergency operations.
He also conducted an inspection of the 17 Ops Murni assets at the camp, including various military trucks, water trailers, field ambulances, safety-equipped boats, and modular tents, all ready for deployment.
Khaled added that the Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast continuous rainfall from the onset of the northeast monsoon in early November until the end of March 2026, affecting states like Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Sabah.
He said that MAF consistently maintain their personnel, assets, and all three service branches — the Malaysian Army, the Royal Malaysian Navy, and the Royal Malaysian Air Force — at an optimal level to ensure a rapid response.
“This effort reflects the MAF’s commitment as not only the cornerstone of national defence but also as an organisation dedicated to public safety and well-being at all times,” Khaled said.
Nadma has also supplied modular (Bailey) bridges, which can be mobilised as required.
“The MAF will focus on areas showing increased risk of flooding, based on real-time monitoring once rainfall begins,” he said.
Ops Murni is being conducted in line with the Whole of Government, Whole of Society approach and the aspirations of the Defence White Paper through the Comprehensive Defence (HANRUH) concept to protect the public during emergencies and disasters.
