Selangor JKM mulls turning empty buildings into senior citizen centres

HULU LANGAT, Nov 13 — The Selangor Social Welfare Department (JKM) is looking into transforming abandoned buildings into senior citizen care and activity centres.

Selangor JKM director Azmir Kassim said initial studies would cover safety, location suitability, and access facilities before any decision is made.

“We are looking at two areas right now, Sabak Bernam and Sungai Buloh, but we still have a ways to go.

“Among (the factors) we will consider is the senior citizen population size there and if there are issues over care in those areas,” Azmir said.

Previously, state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari reportedly said the state government is looking to convert abandoned buildings into senior citizen care and activity centres.

She said that if the recommendation is sound, it won’t only involve the physical upgrading of the buildings, but the realignment of care centre guidelines to be more relevant to demographic changes and current needs.
