ALOR SETAR, Nov 10 — The search and rescue (SAR) operation for victims of a capsized boat in the waters off Langkawi entered its second day today, with the search area expanded to 255.66 square nautical miles.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said in a statement that the operation resumed at 7.30 am, involving six agencies.

The MMEA deployed five of its assets, namely KM Siangin, Perkasa 1224, Perkasa 1226, Petir 81m and CL 415-Sums APMM.

Also taking part are the Marine Police Region One with three assets (PSC 20, RH 68 and PLC 5); the Royal Malaysian Navy with one vessel, KD Ledang; the Fisheries Department with DOF 2511; the Fire and Rescue Department with a Kevlar boat; and the Civil Defence Force with a rigid inflatable boat.

The operation was launched following reports that one of three boats allegedly carrying about 300 migrants had capsized in the Pulau Tarutao waters near the Thailand-Malaysia maritime border.

As of last night, seven migrants had been confirmed dead, while 13 others were rescued.

A staff of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency checks on a survivor who was rescued by a fishing boat's crew close to Langkawi, on November 9, 2025.
