KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 — Media practitioners not only present the news, but play an important role in making the government’s development agenda a success, especially in environmental issues.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) secretary-general Datuk Ching Thoo Kim said every media report helps build public understanding on various issues.
“Many issues involving this ministry have received attention, among them, the death of an elephant calf in Gerik that was widely covered. The incident taught us many lessons. Among the main messages were the importance of preserving the environment and invaluable national heritage,” he said in his speech at a media appreciation ceremony here last night.
He expressed hope that the media continues to be an important bridge between the ministry and the people in broadcasting environmental conservation messages.
The event gathered over 200 media representatives from various news, broadcasting and publishing agencies.
Ching said the NRES is committed to strengthening its environmental conservation agenda.
“The ministry is promoting a new lifestyle by making environmental sustainability a part of daily life.
“This effort will take time, but with media support, I believe the goal of ‘culturalising’ environmental sustainability among the people can be achieved,” Ching said.
