SHAH ALAM, Nov 5 — Some 32 factory workers were detained after being suspected of using fake identity cards during an integrated operation at a factory in Port Klang yesterday.
The operation, known as Op Litar, was conducted by the Putrajaya National Registration Department's (JPN) Investigation and Enforcement Division, in collaboration with JPN Selangor and the Selangor Immigration Department.
Inspections revealed that all suspects, aged between 21 and 48, were believed to have used counterfeit identity cards or cards belonging to other individuals to secure employment at the premises.
JPN Putrajaya Investigation and Enforcement Division deputy director Salmi Kiprawi said thorough checks were carried out to curb the alarming rise in document forgery and identity fraud.
“The misuse of identity cards is a serious offence that can compromise public interests and threaten national security,” she said in a statement.
All individuals are being investigated under Regulation 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, which carries a maximum penalty of three years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM20,000, or both.
JPN emphasised that strict action will continue to be taken to combat the misuse of identification documents, particularly among foreign nationals, and urged the public to report any suspicious activities.
