SEPANG, Nov 1 — Selangor remains committed to environmental sustainability by stepping up efforts to protect peatland areas, as part of ongoing measures to curb open burning and haze.
State executive councillor for public health and environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said safeguarding peatland ecosystems is not only crucial for the environment, but also for the long-term well-being of the people.
"Programmes like the Selangor Environment Day 2025 celebration today serve as a vital platform to remind the people that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility.
"This initiative is in line with the implementation of the Selangor Peatland Standard Operating Procedures and Management Master Plan in tackling peatland open burning and haze,” she said.
Jamaliah was speaking at the celebration organised by the Selangor Environment Department at the Paya Indah Wetlands in Dengkil here today.
She also noted that the Selangor DOE adopted SK Kampung Johan Setia in Klang as its community partner school on September 27 to strengthen environmental education among students.
Jamaliah added that the state launched the Selangor Climate Change Policy on November 25, 2024 as a strategic guide towards sustainable development.
“To ensure smooth implementation, the Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre (SCAC) was established to bridge policy, technology and collaborative efforts.
“This ensures Selangor remains prepared to face future climate challenges,” she said.
Today's event featured a variety of activities, including the Peat Run 4 Environment, Jualan Ehsan Rahmah programme, exhibitions by DOE strategic partners, sustainability workshops, interactive quizzes and aerobics sessions.
The community-friendly programme also offered health screenings, colouring sessions and pocket talks on environmental awareness.
