SHAH ALAM, Oct 25 — Yayasan Insan Istimewa Selangor (YaNIS) is hoping that the 2026 Selangor Budget focuses on developing aid technology to empower disabled people (OKU) in the state.
YaNIS chief executive officer Kamarul Hisham said aid technology could mean OKU aren’t just beneficiaries, but also active contributors to the economy and community.
“With the state government’s support, we want the OKU community to be seen as contributors in the state development ecosystem.
“Aid tech development could open many more job opportunities and new innovations,” he said when met at the International Summit on Disability-Inclusive Futures 2025 (ISDIF) at AEON Shah Alam yesterday.
Kamarul suggested special allocations be channelled into research and development for social innovation and aid technology to ensure a more sustainable, high-impact approach.
He also emphasised residents’ role as the state government’s implementation partners for policies towards an inclusive community, and encouraged the active involvement of private companies through their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes to strengthen OKU-friendly ecosystems in Selangor.
“Support from all quarters, including the corporate sector and general public, is highly important. When everyone plays their roles, we can shape an environment that is truly OKU-friendly and inclusive,” Kamarul said.
Meanwhile, at the same event, YaNIS signed a cooperation deal with Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) to empower the OKU community.
Kamarul said YaNIS’ participation in the ISDIF is a strategic step to strengthen global networks in OKU policy, innovation and community development.
“Events like this aren’t just academic discourse but spaces to shape more inclusive, sustainable policies,” he highlighted, adding that ISDIF facilitated discussions on whole-of-society approaches that emphasise cooperation between the state government, private sector, and civil society.
He said YaNIS and UiTM will implement OKU-friendly training and academic programmes to widen their job opportunities and strengthen state policies.
“At least 1,000 disabled individuals in Selangor are set to benefit (from this effort) by 2026,” he added.
The YaNIS head stressed that leadership within the OKU community is important so they can be voices and agents of change in the group.
“No one should be left behind. We want Selangor to be an exemplary state in the implementation of inclusive policies,” Kamarul said.
