Exco: Sex education in Jais-administered schools requires thorough review

SHAH ALAM, Oct 16 — The proposal to include a sex education syllabus in schools under the state government must be carefully reviewed before implementation.

State executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said schools managed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) are bound by existing enactments, regulations, and inspections that must be respected.

“Preliminary discussions need to involve Jais and the Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais). A comprehensive discussion must take place before it can be implemented.

“It cannot be denied that there is a need, but I am confident and believe that there are already existing regulations in force to prevent undesirable behaviour in our religious schools,” he said.

Fahmi was speaking to the press after officiating the 'Syariah Criminal Law Seminar: Offences, Implications and Integrity of Public Servants' at the State Secretariat Building today.

Yesterday, state executive councillor for women’s empowerment and social welfare Anfaal Saari said she would hold discussions with Fahmi to strengthen sex education in schools administered by Jais.

The proposal aims to reinforce the education sector and prevent immoral acts, following a recent rape case involving a school student in Jasin, Melaka.
