MOSCOW, Sept 20 — French President Emmanuel Macron has confirmed that the country will recognise the State of Palestine on September 22 at a meeting of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, the United States (US), reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

The 80th anniversary session of the UNGA opened on September 9. As per tradition, it will include a high-level week, with general debates to be held from September 23 to September 27, as well as on September 29.

"I have just spoken with the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas…I reiterated to President Abbas my intention to recognise the State of Palestine on Monday in New York," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, adding that this decision is part of a broader peace plan for the region.

In turn, Abbas confirmed his determination to implement necessary reforms to renew Palestinian leadership.

On Friday, the Politico newspaper reported that Israel was preparing retaliatory measures in response to the expected recognition of the State of Palestine by France.

These measures could include accelerating annexations in the West Bank and the closure of the French consulate in Jerusalem. A French diplomat was quoted as saying that Paris is simultaneously considering various scenarios for responding to Israeli actions.

The State of Palestine is recognised by 147 countries, including Russia. In 2024, the US vetoed Palestine's full membership in the UN. Since 2024, ten countries have recognised Palestine, including Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Armenia.
