Air Selangor begins pipe replacement in Taman Selayang Baru to resolve water pressure issues

SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd has started replacing ageing pipelines in Taman Selayang Baru to address persistent low water pressure faced by residents.

Its head of corporate communication Elina Baseri said the first phase of works involves replacing 700 metres of asbestos cement (AC) pipelines along Jalan Selayang Baru, with completion targeted for December this year.

“Subsequently, another package covering Jalan 14 and Jalan 16 will be awarded to a contractor by the end of 2025 and completed by the end of 2026.

“The remaining 6.8km of pipelines in the neighbourhood are also being planned for replacement, with design work already underway. Implementation is scheduled for October 2026, with completion expected by the end of 2027,” she said in a statement today.

This comes after a news report by The Star yesterday, which quoted residents facing low water pressure in their neighbourhood.

It was also reported that Air Selangor had pledged RM7 million to replace old pipes in the area.

Elina added that in Taman Selayang Baru, the condition of old AC pipes limits the ability to increase water pressure without risking bursts.

“To safeguard supply continuity, water pressure is being regulated through the installation of Pressure Reducing Valves (PRV). The average water pressure in the area is currently maintained at 9mH within this controlled range,” she said.

Elina noted that many of the utility’s 31,000km of pipelines across Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya are between 50 and 60 years old, posing ongoing maintenance challenges.

Air Selangor apologised for the inconvenience caused and thanked residents for their patience as the works are being carried out.
