SEPANG, Sept 10 — Six national wushu exponents are set to earn RM480,000 after their outstanding achievements in the 2025 World Wushu Championships in Brazil recently.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the wushu squad, which bagged five golds, one silver, and two bronzes, are in line for the huge reward under the National Sports Incentives Scheme (Shakam) by taking into account the fact that the World Wushu Championships are held once every two years.
"There is a difference between the badminton and other world championships, with the Badminton World Championships held every year. So, for their achievement this time, the wushu team will receive a total windfall of RM480,000.
"One gold medal is worth RM80,000, a silver is worth RM40,000, and a bronze is worth RM20,000. So, those who bagged the bronze medal will have to split it among themselves, be it between two or three exponents…they will share the RM20,000,” she told the press at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 today.
Si Shin Peng, Tan Cheong Min, Lee Jia Rong, Pang Pui Yee, Bryan Ti Kai Jie, and Clement Ting Su Wei delivered five golds, one silver, and two bronzes for Malaysia in Brasília, with Si — who won golds in the men's Qiangshu and Jianshu events and also a team bronze in Duilian — receiving the highest amount of RM166,666.66.
Tan, who struck gold in the women's Nangun event, a team gold in Duilian and silver in the individual Nandao, pocketed RM146,666.66.
Lee will get RM126,666.66 for winning gold in women's individual Daoshu, a team gold in Duilian and an individual bronze in Gunshu.
Pang received RM26,666.66 for winning gold in the women's team Duilian event, while Ti and Ting pocketed RM6,666.66 each for winning the bronze medal in the team Duilian event.
Meanwhile, Yeoh added that mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei received RM40,000 each after their maiden World Badminton Championships triumph in Paris recently.
Women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan, who finished as runners-up at the Paris world meet, took home RM20,000 each.
