CyberSecurity Malaysia launches nation's first vehicle forensics laboratory

CYBERJAYA, Sept 8 — CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM), a Digital Ministry agency, launched the country's first Vehicle Forensics Laboratory today to strengthen its digital forensic capabilities for incident investigations, particularly in accidents and criminal cases.

Launched by Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo, the laboratory is also expected to support criminal investigations into offences like smuggling, human trafficking, and cross-border crime that involve vehicles.

Speaking to the press after the launch, he said the lab's establishment addresses the growing need to manage and analyse data effectively, to facilitate investigations, and help identify the true cause of an incident.

“When we have the data, we can assess and examine how an incident actually occurred. First, it allows us to resolve the matter from an investigative standpoint.

“Second, it lets us determine the root causes that led to the incident. With this understanding, we can then take the necessary steps to address any shortcomings that may have contributed to the accident,” Gobind said.

He added that modern vehicles are no longer merely a mode of transport but also a significant source of digital data, including engine performance, driving patterns, Global Positioning System (GPS) locations, camera recordings, and infotainment system logs.

“This data is vital for automotive industry research and serves as digital evidence for accident investigations, criminal cases and public safety,” Gobind said.

The minister clarified that CSM will conduct vehicle forensic analysis upon formal requests from enforcement agencies like the Royal Malaysia Police and Road Transport Department, while ensuring full compliance with legal provisions, particularly regarding personal data protection.

“In Malaysia, we have clear laws regarding personal data protection and cybersecurity. We must ensure all legal requirements are strictly met before any data is released for investigative purposes.

"We will not compromise on this matter,” he said.

The laboratory has also earned recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records as the 'First Vehicle Forensics Laboratory in Malaysia', highlighting CSM’s expertise in cybersecurity and digital forensics while solidifying the agency’s reputation for innovation in automotive forensics.
