Five killed as Pakistani chopper crashes during flood rescue

ISLAMABAD, Sept 1 — A Pakistani military helicopter crashed in the country’s mountainous north on Monday, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

Officials confirmed that all five crew members were killed. It was the second such incident in less than a month.

The helicopter was on a rescue mission after floods hit the Diamer area of the Gilgit-Baltistan region near Pakistan's border with China, said regional government spokesman Faizullah Faraq.

An inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the crash, with Faraq saying initial assessment pointed to a technical fault.

It came weeks after a similar crash caused by bad weather in the north-western region of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, which left five crew members dead.

More than 850 people have been killed by floods in Pakistan after weeks of erratic monsoon rains.

Pakistan, a country with a population of more than 240 million, is one of the most vulnerable nations to the impact of climate change, according to the United Nations.

Each year, hundreds of people die in climate-induced disasters in the country, with thousands more losing their homes and livelihoods.
