Gender Outlook Forum 2025: Selangor calls for greater women’s participation in politics

SUBANG JAYA, Aug 29 — The organisation of the Gender Outlook Forum 2025 is an important platform to ensure fundamental changes in relation to gender equality.

State executive councillor for women’s development and social welfare Anfaal Saari said that through the programme, it was not merely about discussions, but also about taking actions aligned with the women’s empowerment agenda.

“This is the first time the forum has been held, and a range of themes has been reinforced. For example, based on the gender analysis index, women’s participation in the education and health sectors is strong; however, a gap remains in politics and the economy.

“Through this forum, we are raising two key topics for discussion, aimed at breaking down barriers and establishing mechanisms to ensure women’s participation in government,” she said after officiating the programme's closing ceremony today.

Anfaal also noted that women’s participation in politics in Selangor remains low, at just 16 per cent, with only nine women representatives out of 56 elected representatives.

This percentage is unsatisfactory, and the councillor hopes there will be an increase in the coming elections, not only through the Election Commission, but beginning with the commitment of political parties themselves.

“Women’s participation in politics is vital to amplify the voices of vulnerable groups, including women, children, senior citizens, and disabled persons. With fewer women in politics, the less these voices are heard.

“These groups must be protected and their dignity uplifted with strong policies. However, this effort requires the cooperation of men who are sensitive to their struggles,” she said.
