Aerospace to remain key focus of RS-2

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — The aerospace industry remains central to the state’s long-term agenda and will be among the main focus areas in the Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said today.

Under the Selangor Aerospace Action Plan 2020-2030, he said the state has outlined key initiatives to boost investment and strengthen its position as a regional aviation hub.

He added that the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) already underscored the importance of developing a specialised hub for the industry to attract more global aerospace companies to Selangor and Malaysia.

“We will continue the momentum for the aerospace industry in RS-2 (2026-2030), which will be released by the middle of next year,” he said in his speech at the Selangor Aerospace Roundtable Meeting with diplomatic heads here today.

Amirudin noted that the state is now home to almost 70 per cent of Malaysia’s aerospace activity, adding that it has been his mission since becoming menteri besar to scale up the industry in Selangor, having recognised its importance to the economy, national security, and societal progress.

“Today, our main focus is on the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) components,” he said.

According to Amirudin, the realisation of the Selangor Aero Park (SAP) at KLIA Aeropolis will provide an opportunity for new and existing aerospace and logistics players to expand their reach and allow more aircraft to use maintenance facilities in Selangor.

“We have begun with just over 200 acres (81ha), but with more than double the room to expand, as KLIA’s commercial space is nearing its maximum capacity.

“Subang is not too far away, and while it has been compartmentalised into private business travel, the short distance between the two airports gives us room to increase our market share in this segment.”

The SAP, which spans about 600 acres within KLIA Aeropolis — with the first phase taking up about 200 acres — has a potential gross development value (GDV) of RM2.3 billion.

The project is part of the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030’s vision to generate RM55.2 billion in annual aerospace revenue.

On June 5, during the SAP groundbreaking ceremony, Transport Minister Anthony Loke had said that the park’s development will boost Malaysia’s efforts to become a leading air cargo hub in Southeast Asia.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said unlike previous years where the Selangor Aviation Show (SAS) is held on the tarmac with static displays, this year’s edition in October will be held indoors at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, in conjunction with the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) 2025.

“The event will focus more on industry-related topics such as drones, autonomous underwater vehicles, space industry, and sustainable aviation energy.”
