Over RM85,000 worth of unregistered medicines seized at KLIA Terminal 1

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 22 — The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) has seized unregistered medicines worth over RM85,000 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 yesterday.

It said the seizure followed suspicions raised by Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) officers after scanning four suitcases belonging to a Bangladeshi man.

In a statement today, AKPS said the luggage was referred to its Pharmaceutical Enforcement Team for further inspection, which uncovered more than 60,000 units of medicines spanning 30 unregistered types.

The items, believed to be bound for the black market and intended for the suspect’s compatriots, included medicines containing controlled substances and psychotropics, 1,000 tubes of antifungal cream, and 20,000 gastric treatment pills.

All seized items were handed over to JKDM for further investigation and will be forfeited and destroyed within a month, in line with existing procedures.

The agency reiterated its firm stance against the smuggling of unregistered medicines, citing serious health and safety risks to the public.
