Indonesia eyes role in Asean cross-border power trade

JAKARTA, Aug 22 — Indonesia, through its state-owned energy company PT Pertamina, is eyeing business opportunities in the development of the Asean Power Grid, a flagship regional energy cooperation initiative of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), reported Xinhua.

The initiative enables countries in the region to trade electricity, supporting both energy security and the integration of renewable energy.

"The opportunity for cross-border electricity trade is very large, especially with Asia's growing energy demand.

"We can imagine scenarios such as selling electricity from Laos to Thailand, and from Thailand to Malaysia, that is the Asean Power Grid," said Pertamina New and Renewable Energy chief executive officer John Anis during an energy talk show in Jakarta yesterday.

He emphasised that Indonesia would always have potential markets, given its abundant energy resources and the region's growing demand.

"Electricity will never be excessive, because in the end it will be absorbed by the market. With the increasing demand for regional electricity, we are optimistic that no matter what capacity is developed in Indonesia, it will find a market," Anis said.
