State moots guidelines to ensure tahfiz students’ safety

SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — The Selangor government is planning a set of guidelines to ensure student safety at tahfiz centres in the state.

State executive councillor for Islam and innovation Dr Fahmi Ngah said his department will work with the Care Economy Permanent Committee to formulate the policy.

“I will organise a workshop with YB Anfaal Saari to discuss these guidelines and student safety policy for tahfiz institutions in the state.

“We will start meeting next week, followed by a joint workshop session with relevant parties. If the guidelines are good to go, they will take effect at all private and government tahfiz centres.

“I am confident, God willing, that if these guidelines are properly formulated, Islamic education in Selangor will be regulated and children’s safety will be ensured,” Fahmi told Media Selangor.

He added that parents must also play a role, and not force their kids to attend tahfiz lessons.

“There are some parents who want to make their children better people by sending them to tahfiz centres even though the kids are unwilling, which could contribute to negative habits like bullying, abuse, and such.

“This should not be happening. As parents, we must listen, advise, and avoid forcing them,” Fahmi said.
