Nearly 1,500 whistleblower complaints filed in past five years

SHAH ALAM, Aug 21 — The government has received 1,482 complaints under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010 (Act 711) between 2020 and 2024, said Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

In a Parliamentary reply dated yesterday, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the law guarantees confidentiality for all whistleblowers, with their identities protected during investigations, enforcement, and court proceedings.

“Under Section 8 of Act 711, the law clearly stipulates that the identity and details of whistleblowers, including any information that could lead to their identification, must remain confidential at every stage of the process. This protection covers investigations, enforcement action, and court proceedings,” she said.

Azalina added that the Parliament had recently passed amendments to strengthen the Act, expanding its scope and improving reporting mechanisms.

She was responding to Jerlun MP Abd Ghani Ahmad’s query on the effectiveness of the Act in protecting whistleblowers.

The minister noted that each investigation must be carried out according to strict procedures.
