HULU LANGAT, Aug 20 — The achievement of local companies in building the large-capacity Langat 2 Water Treatment Plant (WTP) is a new nationwide benchmark in water infrastructure construction.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Langat 2 WTP, which channels clean, treated water to 350,000 accounts (around 1.87 million consumers), proves the abilities of local engineering and technical talent.

“I am grateful for this proud achievement, a project that directly benefits the people. We are proud when we say it was handled by local companies, showcasing their skill and abilities in mastering new technology.

“Even though some equipment was imported, the technical and engineering team’s ability, our expertise, is at a point where the Langat 2 WTP can be considered a large hi-tech project managed by Malaysians. Congratulations!” he said.

Anwar was speaking at the launch of the water infrastructure megaproject that cost RM4.2 billion, developed by Pengurusan Aset Air Bhd.

The Langat 2 WTP has successfully solved water supply issues in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya by increasing treated water reserves, and is equipped with the latest, innovative and environmentally friendly water treatment technology and wastewater disposal.

With a capacity of 1.13 billion litres per day, the Langat 2 WTP channels raw water from Kelau Dam through the Sungai Semantan intake in Pahang, which is channelled through a 44.6km tunnel across the Titiwangsa Range.

The treated water pipe network connects two main corridors — the northern corridor involving Ampang and AU3 Keramat, and the western corridor across Hulu Langat, Cheras, and Sungai Besi to Bukit Jalil, Petaling, Bandar Kinrara, and Bukit Dengkil.

The WTP is equipped with modern technology including dual-filtering (granular activated carbon system), a clarifying tank, and real-time monitoring with the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system.

Its environmentally friendly water treatment technology on the other hand includes static mixers, zero wastewater discharge, and a wastewater conveyor disposal system.
