KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul today issued a 10-day suspension to Pendang MP Datuk Awang Hashim, effective immediately, for making a physical threat against another parliamentarian last week.
In his ruling, Johari said his decision was made after reviewing evidence from the Dewan Rakyat’s audio and video unit, including live microphones and security recordings.
“I personally presided over the sitting when the incident happened. I am very disappointed because the gallery was filled with schoolchildren, and what they saw was an MP showing a fist as if ready to throw a punch.
“I am confident Pendang himself, (as) a grandfather, should know better,” he said today.
The ruling was made under Standing Order 44(2) for disorderly conduct, which allows the Speaker to suspend any MP from the House for up to 10 days.
This comes following a viral video clip showing Awang making a fist gesture towards Bukit Jelutong MP RSN Rayer during proceedings on August 13.
Both men were seen advancing towards each other before being restrained by fellow lawmakers and a Dewan Rakyat sergeant-at-arms.
The altercation followed heated exchanges between the two MPs a day earlier. Rayer had pressed for action against Awang, accusing him of raising racially charged remarks linked to the May 13, 1969, riots during the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate.
