SHAH ALAM, Aug 15 — Selangor continues to record strong tourism performance, welcoming 1.77 million tourists in the first quarter of this year.
Of this, 78 per cent (1.27 million) were domestic tourists while the remaining 22 per cent (500,000) were international visitors.
This achievement represents 22 per cent of the state's 2025 target of eight million tourists, laying a strong foundation for tourism development in the second half of the year.
According to Tourism Selangor, tourist arrivals dipped slightly by 0.6 per cent in the first quarter, compared to 1.777 million during the same period in 2024, while the number of domestic tourists also fell slightly by 0.3 per cent, mainly due to the Ramadan month.
Data showed that from January to February, tourist arrivals rose from 593,299 to 599,058, but dropped to 575,701 in March.
Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling, in an interview with Media Selangor, said Kuala Lumpur remained the largest source of visitors to Selangor, followed by Johor, Perak, Pahang and Penang.
These five states collectively contributed 37 per cent of total tourist arrivals.
Chua added that Kedah, Penang, Johor and Perak recorded increases in visitors to Selangor, rising by 4.9 per cent, 4 per cent, 2.8 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively.
By district, Petaling recorded the highest number of tourists at 53.8 per cent, followed by Sepang (14.7 per cent), Hulu Langat (8.5 per cent), Klang (8.4 per cent), Gombak (7.7 per cent), Hulu Selangor (3.3 per cent), Kuala Selangor (0.7 per cent) and Sabak Bernam (0.7 per cent).
In terms of local authorities, the Petaling Jaya City Council topped the chart with 23.1 per cent, followed by Subang Jaya City Council (22.5 per cent), Sepang Municipal Council (14.7 per cent), Klang Royal City Council (8.4 per cent) and Shah Alam City Council (8.2 per cent).
“Notably, the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council recorded the highest tourist growth rate, surging 312.9 per cent compared with the same period in 2024. Most local councils also recorded growth,"
Chua said Selangor’s average hotel occupancy rate in the first quarter of 2025 was 45 per cent, down slightly by five percentage points from 50 per cent in the same period last year.
However, five local councils registered higher occupancy rates, indicating that the tourism industry in several areas continues to gain positive momentum.
