SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) took prompt action to avert potential water contamination after a crash involving a cement truck at Km35.1 of the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) yesterday morning.

According to Luas, swift action was crucial to prevent the grease spill from reaching Sungai Gombak, which supplies raw water to the Gombak Water Treatment Plant.

It said it had immediately coordinated action with KLK concessionaire AFA Prime Bhd to contain spills from the incident.

“(Following the 11.15am incident), the Luas team arrived at the scene and carried out a thorough inspection of the site and its surroundings. Checks revealed a leak in the truck’s fuel tank, with the oil flowing into a nearby highway sump.

“The highway concessionaire carried out control and prevention measures by placing sawdust on the road, sump, and surrounding affected areas,” Luas said in a Facebook post yesterday.

It said that from its monitoring, no contaminant was found to have flowed from the highway sump into the nearby river, and the situation was under control.

In a follow-up, the water authority said the cement truck had been moved and cleanup was finished at 2am today by the concessionaire.

Luas said it had confirmed there was no longer any grease that could flow into the river, and that no pollutants had entered Sungai Gombak nor presented a contamination risk to the water source.
