KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 – The expansion of Westports and the development of a third terminal in Pulau Carey are among several strategic maritime infrastructure projects under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) aimed at boosting the national economy.

Speaking during the document’s tabling in the Dewan Rakyat today, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government is prioritising high-impact investments in ports and logistics infrastructure as part of its long-term plan to support more efficient maritime trade operations.

“These efforts include the expansion and construction of the third terminal in Pulau Carey, the development of a container terminal at Westports 2, and the expansion of the Tanjung Pelepas Port in Johor,” he said.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said greater focus is being placed on these projects as 94.6 per cent of trade activities currently involve sea access.

Similarly, shipping capacity and bunkering infrastructure will also be improved at ports across Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, and Sarawak.

He added that the initiatives fall under a broader strategy to accelerate the development of high-impact sectors such as semiconductors, renewable energy, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing.

These projects are aimed at positioning Malaysia as a high income nation.
