SHAH ALAM, July 30 — The Selangor government today condemned the recent assault of a schoolteacher by a 14-year-old student, calling it unacceptable and a reflection of deeper issues that must be collectively addressed.
State executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication V. Papparaidu said physical violence in schools cannot be tolerated, and pointed to overprotective parenting and peer influence as key factors behind such behaviour.
“This problem often stems from two main causes, which are parents who overprotect their children without any real basis, and negative peer influence outside of school,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, it was reported that a 14-year-old male student was detained for allegedly punching and threatening his teacher after being reprimanded for skipping a physical education class on Monday.
Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof had said the 29-year-old secondary school teacher lodged a report at about 7.15pm on Monday, and the student was detained shortly afterwards in Kajang.
The student, from a Form 1 transition class, pleaded guilty at the Kajang Magistrates’ Court this morning to punching the teacher.
His lawyer said the teenager regretted his actions and had apologised.
The court set bail at RM1,000 and fixed September 11 for the Social Welfare Department to submit a probation report before sentencing.
Papparaidu praised the teacher for staying calm and professional, adding that the incident should serve as a reminder that misconduct will have consequences.
He also said character-building must begin at home, and warned that some parents today are too quick to defend their children without reflection.
Meanwhile, Papparaidu urged teachers to speak up against threats or violence, and called for stronger protection for educators.
