SHAH ALAM, July 30 — The efforts to extinguish a fire at a four-acre illegal landfill site in the M Residence 2 area, Rawang, are actively ongoing, with firefighting operations now reaching 50 per cent completion.
The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department's Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said that suppression efforts are continuing via “direct attack”, with operations extending up to 20 hours a day.
Drones equipped with infrared sensors are also being deployed to identify hotspots within the affected area.
“There are several hotspots in different sections of the site, and extinguishing efforts are underway with the help of an excavator,” he said when contacted.
In addition to firefighters, the operation also involves personnel from the Land and Mines Office, the Selangor Humanitarian Aid Mission Association (Pantas), and the Civil Defence Force (APM).
Previously, the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) reported that it had inspected the site to assess any potential risks and impacts the fire may pose to nearby water sources.
This includes Sungai Kundang, whose flow enters Sungai Sembah and eventually leads into Sungai Selangor, where the state’s main water treatment plants — SSP1, SSP2, and SSP3 — are located.
Further monitoring by Luas found no runoff from firefighting efforts entering nearby drains, nor any contaminated discharge reaching Sungai Kundang, which is estimated to be about 1.5 kilometres from the fire site.
As of 8pm yesterday, its on-site verification confirmed there was no risk of contamination to Sungai Kundang, and the river’s current condition remains stable and under control.
