Germany commends Malaysia's diplomatic role in Thai, Cambodian ceasefire

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Germany has expressed its appreciation to Malaysia for playing an active mediating role in resolving the recent border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The recognition was conveyed by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a phone call late yesterday evening.

“This is a recognition of Malaysia’s regional diplomatic capability and commitment to upholding peace and stability within Asean.

“As (the) 2025 Asean chair, Malaysia remains committed to strengthening regional unity and stability through diplomacy, dialogue, and humanitarian principles,” he said in a Facebook post today.

During their conversation, Anwar and Merz also exchanged views on the increasingly strong Malaysia-Germany bilateral relation, reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding strategic cooperation across various sectors.

“Close partnerships with international allies such as Germany are crucial to strengthening Asean's role as a credible, progressive, and principled regional bloc,” he said.

The commendation follows Anwar’s swift and effective diplomacy that prompted Thailand and Cambodia to agree to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to de-escalate tensions along their disputed borders.

The breakthrough came after a special meeting chaired by Anwar in Putrajaya yesterday.

The high-level talks were attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, and have since received international praise for Malaysia’s role in facilitating dialogue and peace in the region.
