Luas takes immediate action over Sg Semenyih odour pollution

SHAH ALAM, July 28 — An abnormal odour was detected along Sungai Semenyih early today, prompting the Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) to take immediate measures to prevent contamination of the state’s water source.

In a Facebook post, Luas said it detected up to 10 threshold odour number (TON) in the river at 1.40am, after which it activated Code Yellow, in accordance with the state’s water pollution emergency manual.

Four pumps were activated to channel 616 million litres per day of water from the Raw Water Guarantee Scheme to the intake point of the Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant (WTP), as an alternative to the contaminated river water.

Luas also ramped up monitoring efforts, with checks every 30 minutes at a static point 1.5km upstream of the Sungai Semenyih WTP intake, and launched a joint probe with Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd into the odour source.

“Preliminary investigations by Luas and Air Selangor suspect the abnormal odour originated from Sungai Kabul. Investigations in the area were still underway this morning,” it said.

Luas said odour readings at its static monitoring point began to improve at 5.30am, reaching 3 TON at 8.30am.

“The situation is under control. Luas continues to carry out monitoring and is investigating the source of the abnormal odour along with Air Selangor.”
