KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) dismantled the main stage used during a gathering at Dataran Merdeka today after it was found to have failed safety standards.
Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan said checks revealed that the stage was built without considering the actual capacity it could safely hold during the event.
“The structure was erected without approval from the authorities, and no safety or capacity details were submitted to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),” he said in a statement.
Initial discussions between PDRM and the organiser had only agreed on using two Hilux four-wheel drives as the main stage.
Usuf added that the authorities are now reviewing possible breaches of procedures and regulations, and may take action if laws were violated.
The gathering involved five key locations: Masjid Negara, Central Market, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru, and the SOGO shopping centre, before moving on to Dataran Merdeka.
