SHAH ALAM, July 15 — The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) predicts dry weather across most parts of the country for six days beginning July 18, with maximum temperatures expected to reach up to 36°C in certain areas.

It said the conditions are due to the formation of a tropical storm in the western Pacific Ocean near the Philippines.

"Based on weather model analysis, MetMalaysia forecasts that dry and less rainy conditions are likely to occur in most parts of the country from July 18 to July 23," MetMalaysia said in a significant weather forecast issued today.

The agency advised the public to regularly refer to its website, official social media channels, or the myCuaca app for the latest and verified weather information.

Previously, in May, MetMalaysia director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the country is expected to face a hot weather spell until mid-September due to the annual southwest monsoon season.

The season is characterised by drier conditions, due to lower humidity and a more stable atmosphere.

On June 27, state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim said Selangor’s raw water supply is sufficient to cover the hot weather spell, with main dams holding between three and six months’ capacity.

The seven main dams — Sungai Selangor Dam (Hulu Selangor), Sungai Tinggi Dam (Hulu Selangor), Tasik Subang Dam (Petaling), Sungai Langat Dam (Hulu Langat), Semenyih Dam (Hulu Langat), Klang Gates Dam (Gombak), and Batu Dam (Gombak) — are at above 95 per cent capacity and operating well.

“Dam water levels in Selangor are expected to remain stable for several months even amid the southwest monsoon. The levels could improve during the monsoon transition, usually in October, and the northeast monsoon from November to March, when high rainfall is expected at catchment areas,” he said in a statement.

Izham added that 100 pools, including several former mines and river basins in Selangor, will be utilised to help the state cope with the drought.
