SHAH ALAM, July 10 — The Selangor government is developing underused land across the state through various agricultural initiatives to enhance food security, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
He said Selangor secured RM20.76 million under the Agricultural and Food Security Ministry’s 2025 National Food Security Programme for projects to boost local food production and optimise unused land.
Among the ongoing projects are the Barbados Black Belly sheep-breeding programme, ginger cultivation, Ehsan Tani urban farming, MD2 pineapple integration under the Matag seed programme, and a 10-acre (over 4ha) chili fertigation project involving 20 participants in Mardi Klang.
“The state government, through the Selangor Agricultural Department, also provides incentives and grants to food crop farmers, including in urban areas, in line with the objectives of the Selangor Agro Transformation Plan,” he told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly here today.
Other ongoing initiatives include food production parks, Good Agricultural Practices, fertigation and herb farming, livestock feed crop cultivation, apiculture for honey and stingless bees (kelulut), and agrotourism.
He said additional support is provided through the supply of farming inputs, machinery, and livestock feed to farmers and agro-based industry players.
As of 2024, Selangor has 32,720ha of agricultural land in use, with 21,544 farmers operating under the supervision of the Selangor Agriculture Department.
“All these initiatives aim to ensure long-term food security while creating economic opportunities for farmers and agropreneurs statewide,” he said.
