State widens use of solar streetlights under green push

By Yasmin Ramlan

SHAH ALAM, July 10 — The Selangor government is expanding the use of solar-powered LED streetlights as a green, cost-effective solution for public infrastructure, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.

He said that through the ongoing Selangor Bercahaya (Glowing Selangor) programme, over 350 hi-spec solar lights are being installed this year.

He said the use of the lights, which come with a five-year warranty, would lower energy and maintenance costs and are designed to deter vandalism and cable theft.

“This type of streetlight also helps reduce vandalism due to its modern, hidden design, and minimal maintenance needs. It also addresses the widespread issue of cable theft, as it doesn’t rely on exposed electrical wiring.

“Previously, the cost of purchasing these lights was relatively high, but prices have dropped significantly due to increased production, with some even cheaper than existing streetlights,” he said at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.

Izham said the state is helping light federal roads with these lamps, too, especially in cable theft hotspots, and is gradually replacing outdated infrastructure.

He added that local councils are encouraged to adopt this approach as a more sustainable, secure solution for public lighting.
