Environmental Quality Order takes effect

KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The Environmental Quality (Delegation of Powers to Government Departments, Local Authorities and Corporations) Order 2025, gazetted on Monday, took effect yesterday.

Environment Department director-general Datuk Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said the move was a proactive one to tackle issues under the department and its agencies’ jurisdiction.

“The effectiveness of this approach can be seen in the implementation of two series of Op Hazard, where with the cooperation of various departments and agencies, we managed to seize e-waste worth over RM66 million,” he said in a statement today.

The new order combines six existing orders and is aimed at strengthening enforcement and expediting action in the field.

The agencies given power under the order include the Royal Malaysia Police, Malaysian Armed Forces, Health Ministry, Marine Department, Fisheries Department, Fire and Rescue Department, and local authorities and corporations.

The order will be followed with the drafting of implementation guidelines and training for agencies involved to ensure clear understanding about the duties and limits of their powers.
