SHAH ALAM, July 7 — The political secretary to Menteri Besar Dato’ Amirudin Shari has rebuked the Selangor PAS youth chief, Mohamed Sukri Omar, over statements made by the latter regarding Amirudin’s recent briefing to state assemblymen about the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion.
In a statement released yesterday, Saifuddin Shafi Muhammad said Mohamed Sukri seems to be confused about the distinction between the duties of the executive and legislative branches of the state, and that he has wrongly asked Amirudin to have the matter debated in the Dewan Rakyat.
“It is the prerogative of the House Speaker to make that decision and we have to respect that,” Saifuddin said.
Yesterday, it was reported that Mohamed Sukri had called on Amirudin to not shirk his responsibilities and to allow state representatives to debate the findings of the police report, released on July 1, that said the Putra Heights incident required No Further Action (NFA) following criminal investigations that found no elements of negligence or sabotage.
Saifuddin also said that Mohamed Sukri’s statement yesterday, accusing the Selangor government of treating its assemblymen like school children when it held the briefing to explain the findings, was shallow and uncalled for.
“Mohamed Sukri does not understand accountability. He does not understand the state government’s duty to be open to engagement.
“When the Federal government under Perikatan Nasional rolled out the vaccination programme for the whole nation in 2021, it too, gave a special briefing to all parliamentarians.
“Does Mohamed Sukri now want to criticise this move? Was Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, the prime minister of that time, treating the parliamentarians like kids, too?” Saifuddin added.
He called on Mohamed Sukri and Selangor PAS to refrain from politicising the tragedy and to allow the state government to disclose all that is necessary to the victims and lawmakers in the state.
