SHAH ALAM, July 6 — The upgrading of sports facilities, including stadiums, local authority halls, and the Darul Ehsan Aquatic Centre in Section 13, is expected to be completed by March next year.

State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said preparations for hosting the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) have reached around 50 per cent, with various efforts being actively carried out to ensure the smooth running of the biennial event.

“At present, the state government is actively refurbishing and upgrading sports facilities. We are intensifying efforts to accelerate the repair and upgrade works. By March 2026, we aim to have all these facilities in good condition and ready for use.

“Selangor already has many sports facilities, but they need to be improved and upgraded,” he said after officiating the presentation of the 2025 Muassasah Hajj Incentive by the Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) Foundation, or MBI, for the Kota Anggerik state constituency, at Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah today.

On June 27, Najwan announced that the Petronas Sepang International Circuit (Petronas SIC) has been confirmed as the official venue for the opening ceremony of Sukma Selangor 2026.

He said the Sukma Selangor Secretariat finalised the decision in a bid to create a different atmosphere from previous editions, which were typically held in stadiums.

During the tabling of the 2025 Selangor Budget on November 15 last year, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin announced a RM6 million allocation to implement sports development programmes as part of preparations for the 22nd edition of Sukma.

The last time Selangor hosted Sukma was in 1998, when the state also emerged as overall champion.
