SEPANG, July 2 — The Petronas Sepang International Circuit (SIC), which was named the venue for the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2026 opening ceremony, has up-to-date facilities and infrastructure to support the event, said the venue’s corporate development general manager Faisal Zakaria.
Faisal said the Petronas SIC team’s expertise in organising prestigious events was the main reason the site was selected.
“God willing, we are ready to support, based on our expertise organising major events. Several engagement sessions have been held with the state government and the Sukma organising secretariat.
“For now, we will cooperate to organise the opening ceremony. Further discussions are underway on preparations for one of the biggest events globally,” he told a press conference at the Selangor Marathon 2025 here yesterday.
Previously, state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi announced that the Sukma 2026 opening ceremony will be held at Petronas SIC.
He said the Sukma Selangor Secretariat chose the venue as it wanted an atmosphere distinct from previous openings of the biennial event.
Najwan added that Petronas SIC won’t just project the image of Selangor as an economically and administratively progressive state, but also as a world-class sporting events destination.
According to the Petronas SIC website, the venue’s main and corporate seating area can hold 32,000 people, while the entire compound can house over 170,000 spectators.
Built in February 1998, the circuit has hosted major sporting events such as the F1 Grand Prix, MotoGP, Super GT, Asian Le Mans Series, and the Superbike World Championship.
Selangor last hosted the Sukma in 1998, where it emerged overall champion.
