MPAJ orders vape, e-cig shops to remove ads, stiff action for non-compliance

SHAH ALAM, June 29 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has ordered 126 electronic cigarette or vape business premises to remove advertisements on both physical and digital platforms.

Its Deputy President Hasrolnizam Shaari said strict action would be taken, including the issuance of a Notice of Business Licence Cancellation (NPL), should they fail to comply.

“This enforcement follows a directive by the Selangor government, which imposed a comprehensive ban on the advertisement of smoking products, including vape, effective May 20, 2025.

“The ban is in line with provisions under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852), which prohibits the advertisement, promotion, and sponsorship of all tobacco products, smoking substances, and synthetic tobacco substitutes.

“Section 7, Section 8, and Section 9 of the Act clearly prohibit any form of publication or promotion related to tobacco products,” he said.

The state government has instructed all local authorities to immediately remove and confiscate any form of advertising related to e-cigarettes or vape products across Selangor, whether in physical or digital form.

According to the state executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin, the move is based on Act 852's provisions, aimed at protecting the public — particularly the younger generation — from the growing threat posed by vaping.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari announced that a proposal to ban the sale of vape and electronic cigarette products in Selangor would be tabled at the upcoming State Legislative Assembly sitting.

He said the measure follows mounting health concerns, including reports of students vaping near school areas.

Terengganu and Johor are among the states that have already implemented vape sales bans, with Terengganu’s coming into effect on August 1, while Johor has enforced the ban since 2016.
