KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 — Security experts have proposed strict firearm controls and the setup of an anonymous tip line to prevent violent crime in Selangor.

Malaysia Crime Prevention Foundation deputy chairman Dato’ Seri Ayub Yaakob said tight regulations are necessary so firearms are not misused by irresponsible parties.

“Firearms must be periodically audited, including those owned by security firms. National borders must also be watched to prevent firearm smuggling,” he added.

Ayub said murders nowadays are no longer spontaneous actions, but are meticulously planned as revenge or to cover up other misdeeds.

“Police and security officers need more modern skills and equipment for intelligence work. Criminals now use modern technology and firearms,” he explained.

Ayub however praised police for promptly and efficiently solving major cases thanks to their experience and effective intelligence techniques.

Criminal analyst Kamal Affandi Hashim meanwhile emphasised the importance of cooperation among all security agencies.

“State Security Councils and District Security Councils must run comprehensive interventions involving police, local authorities, customs, and implementing departments,” he said.

Another important proposal was the establishment of a criminal database for local authorities to study patterns and take early action.

“With data analysis, we can identify crimes and appropriate prevention methods,” said criminology expert and Manipal University College Malaysia senior lecturer Nadiah Syariani Md Shariff.

The suggestion was backed by Kamal Affandi, who says criminal trends such as misunderstandings and alcohol influence are still among the main motives for murder.

Anonymous tip line

To encourage public involvement, experts suggest setting up a tip line that is safe, accessible, and anonymous.

“Sometimes, people are afraid to report due to safety concerns, so we need an anonymous complaint channel,” said Nadiah.

Ayub agreed with the proposal, emphasising that police must guarantee protection for whistleblowers to encourage community cooperation.

According to the Royal Malaysia Police, 115 murder cases were logged in Selangor from January 2023 to December 2024, topping other states, followed by Perak (60), Johor (59), Sabah (47), and Sarawak (36).

However, Malaysia is still considered among the safest countries, being named the 10th most peaceful nation in the Global Peace Index 2024.
