KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — The Malaysian High Commission in Windhoek, Namibia, yesterday held the inaugural Asean Fiesta to celebrate Malaysia’s 2025 Asean chairmanship, while showcasing the diversity and values of the bloc.
According to the High Commission, the event drew nearly 180 attendees, including Malaysians, Indonesians, Filipinos, Thais and South Koreans, as well as Namibians who are part of the Namibian-Malaysian Association.
“This event also served as a platform for the Malaysian High Commission in Namibia to promote Asean and its related activities, including cuisine, dance, culture, and other initiatives that strengthen ties among Asean communities in Namibia and with the Namibian public,” it said in a statement.
The Asean community in Namibia comprises higher learning students from institutions such as Limkokwing Namibia Campus, International University of Management, University of Namibia, and the Namibia University of Science and Technology.
During the event, Malaysian Chargé d’Affaires Datuk Mohamad Rameez Yahaya gave a general briefing on Asean and Malaysia’s role as Asean chair for 2025.
Among notable guests in attendance were Diplomatic Corps in Namibia doyen Yakuubi Hassan, along with officials from Namibia’s International Relations and Cooperation Ministry, the statement added.
Guests were treated to a Malaysian-style afternoon tea and entertained with cultural performances, including the maumere dance from Indonesia, tinikling dance from the Philippines, muay thai martial arts from Thailand, and taekwondo demonstrations from South Korea.
Visitors also had the opportunity to explore booths set up by Asean and south Korean communities.
