SHAH ALAM, June 9 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has conveyed his condolences to the families of those affected by the tragic bus crash involving students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (Upsi), which claimed at least 15 lives early this morning.

Taking to Facebook, Amirudin expressed sadness over the incident and said the state government is monitoring the situation closely, particularly to identify if any students from Selangor were among the victims.

“I received the heartbreaking news of the accident involving Upsi students. I offer my deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

“The state government is following the developments closely, especially to determine if any Selangor students were involved in this tragedy,” he said.

The fatal crash occurred around 1.10am on the East–West Highway in Banun, Gerik, Perak, involving a chartered bus and a Perodua Alza.

Authorities confirmed that 13 victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while two more succumbed to injuries at the hospital. A total of 48 people were on board.

The bus was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the Upsi campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, following the Hari Raya Aidiladha holidays. Most of the passengers were students returning to campus after the festive break.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also expressed his condolences, describing the accident as a sobering reminder to prioritise safety on the road.

Anwar instructed the Higher Education Ministry to coordinate aid for the victims’ families, assuring that necessary assistance will be channeled swiftly.

Its minister, Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir, confirmed the ministry’s support for the affected students and families, adding that further updates will be provided in due course.

Meanwhile, in a statement this morning, Upsi confirmed that it has received an early report of the incident and is taking immediate follow-up actions.

The university urged the public and the Upsi community to pray for the affected students and their families.

A special operations room has also been activated, and those seeking updates or assistance can contact 05-450 7148 (office) or 019-571 9977 (hotline).

Upsi added that it remains committed to the welfare of its students and will continue to offer support to the families of the victims.
