SHAH ALAM, June 4 — The state’s rent aid for victims of the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion will be extended for up to a year.

State executive councillor for housing and culture Dato’ Borhan Aman Shah said the RM2,000 monthly aid is to ensure victims have proper shelter until their homes are repaired, especially those whose houses were destroyed.

“For those whose homes were partially damaged, we will provide continued assistance until their houses are repaired, which may take up to eight months. Once complete and they are able to move back in, we will stop the aid.

“We will monitor the repair process of each home to facilitate aid distribution,” he told Media Selangor, adding that the state has allocated about RM4 million for the rental assistance.

According to Borhan, 313 victims have received three months’ rental aid, with the remaining to be distributed soon.

He added that over 100 victims have yet to receive the aid due to documentation issues, including cases where applicants used others’ bank accounts, which needed to be verified.

“The state government will continue to assist the victims to ensure their welfare.”

In the April 1 incident, a leak along a Petronas-owned gas pipeline caused an explosion, which sent flames up to 30m into the sky. Firefighters took nearly eight hours to extinguish the blaze.

The blast left a 9.8m-deep crater and damaged over 400 nearby homes.
