Transport Ministry wants all LRT stations to be fitted with platform doors

PUTRAJAYA, June 4 — The Transport Ministry (MOT) has instructed Prasarana Malaysia Berhad to install passenger platform doors or platform screen doors at all Light Rail Transit (LRT) stations as part of efforts to enhance passenger safety.

Its minister Anthony Loke said he has instructed Prasarana to install such doors at all LRT stations, especially those with older designs that currently lack the safety feature.

The directive aims to enhance safety measures across the LRT system, noting that newer Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations are already equipped with such doors, which act as a barrier between passengers and the train tracks.

“Passenger platform doors are already in place at MRT stations, serving as an additional layer of protection before the train arrives. However, there are a few LRT stations that have yet to be fitted with platform doors,” he said during a press conference today.

Loke was responding to the death of a Taiwanese man, who is believed to have fallen onto the LRT tracks and been fatally struck by a train at the Pusat Bandar Puchong Station in Selangor yesterday.

The minister added that he had received a report on the incident and that the matter had been handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police for further investigation.

“We understand that it was indeed an accident, but we will leave it to the police to conduct a thorough investigation. CCTV footage will also be handed over to assist in the process,” he said.

When asked if the victim’s family had been notified, Loke said Prasarana would coordinate with the Foreign Ministry to follow up on the matter.
