KLANG, June 2 — Over RM4 million has been allocated by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) this year for the cleaning and beautification of Sungai Klang, said Mayor Dato’ Abd Hamid Hussain.

The cost involves implementing a long-term plan, including installing waste-trap nets and placing a 'trash skimmer' system, a water surface cleaning technology.

He said that other initiatives include installing barriers (log booms) that function according to the water level to prevent waste from flowing directly into the main river.

“This cost includes periodic maintenance over several months, but it is subject to approval from the Selangor government,” Hamid said while speaking at a programme yesterday.

Simultaneously, he urged the community to collectively maintain cleanliness and not place the responsibility solely on the local authorities.

“The quality of cleanliness reflects the level of awareness and culture within the community. We must continuously seek new, creative, and effective approaches to nurture sustainable hygiene habits and practices,” Hamid said.

Yesterday, 1,234kg of various types of waste was successfully collected by MBDK along with several agencies along a 20km stretch of Sungai Klang, starting from the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC).
