Selangor sets aside RM11 mln for free tuition initiative

SHAH ALAM, June 2 — The state government has allocated RM11 million for the Selangor People’s Tuition Programme (PTRS), which has benefited over 160,000 students.

Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI, Foundation chief Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the free tuition initiative, which kicks off this month, is for those in Forms 4 and 5 who are struggling in class.

“This programme will also benefit those in remedial lessons in primary school,” he told Media Selangor recently.

On April 24, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the PTRS has been identified as a main contributor to the rise in straight-A Selangor students in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exam.

The PTRS for students in Forms 4 and 5 feature extra classes in Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics, Science, History, and Additional Mathematics, and targets students from low-income families with weak academic performance.

Meanwhile, the primary school iteration of the programme focuses on remedial lessons for students weak in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
