SHAH ALAM, May 19 — The newly launched Selangor Climate Adaptation Centre (SCAC) is expected to become a major contributor to the state’s green growth mission and climate resilience efforts amid rising environmental challenges and global uncertainties.

According to Selangor Economic Planning Unit (Upen) deputy state secretary (development) Datuk Johary Anuar, the centre will support the more structured and coordinated implementation of environmental and climate-related policies.

He said the SCAC is a strategic initiative by the state government to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability as Selangor transitions toward a low-carbon economy.

“Selangor must be ready to face both climate-related disasters and external challenges, such as global energy crises and supply chain disruptions.

“The centre will help enhance disaster preparedness and ensure our policies are adaptive to global developments,” Johary said during the question-and-answer session at the SCAC’s launch at the Concorde Hotel today.

He added that lessons from the December 2021 floods and the Covid-19 pandemic have shown the importance of a fast and coordinated response.

Johary also stressed the importance of public-private partnerships, especially in attracting green investment that supports sustainable urban development.

Youth and local communities will also participate in climate initiatives to promote inclusive participation.

Meanwhile, SCAC chief executive officer Daniel Lee said the centre will act as a focal point for climate governance by supporting planning, enforcement, monitoring and evaluation of climate-related initiatives.

“We aim to connect government agencies, the private sector and academia to strengthen climate action at all levels,” he said in his speech.

Lee said the SCAC will facilitate cross-sector partnerships and leverage local and international expertise.

One of the centre’s top priorities is securing financial support, including international climate financing, to fund impactful programmes.

“We need a strong financing framework to scale up our initiatives and meet Selangor’s sustainability goals,” he said.

As a coordination hub, the SCAC will also streamline efforts on carbon management, renewable energy transition, and nature-based solutions. It will help align local actions with national and international climate targets.

The centre is also expected to track Selangor’s sustainability metrics, assist in low-carbon policy design, and support businesses, especially SMEs, in adapting to climate regulations and opportunities.

The Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah officiated the launch of the SCAC.
